How to Request a CNC Machining Quote: The RFQ Checklist Buyers Use

A clear request for quotation (RFQ) is the fastest way to get an accurate price. Incomplete RFQs lead to back-and-forth emails, padded prices or, worse, parts that do not match expectations. Here is how to request a CNC machining quote the way experienced buyers do.

1. Send Both a 3D Model and a 2D Drawing

The 3D model (STEP, STP, IGES or X_T) defines geometry and is used for programming. The 2D drawing (PDF or DWG) communicates what a model cannot: tolerances, thread specifications, surface roughness, finish, material and inspection notes. A 3D model alone is enough for a budget estimate, but a production quote needs both.

2. Specify Material Grade, Not Just “Aluminum”

“Aluminum” could mean 6061-T6, 7075-T6 or 5052 — each has different cost and properties. The same applies to stainless steel (303, 304, 316) and plastics (POM, PA6, PEEK). If you are unsure, state the application and ask for a recommendation.

3. Mark Critical Tolerances Clearly

State a general tolerance standard (for example ISO 2768-m) and mark tighter tolerances only on features that need them — bearing bores, mating surfaces, locating holes. Over-tolerancing is one of the most common reasons for high quotes.

4. Define Surface Finish and Color

Write the finish exactly: “clear anodize Type II”, “black hard anodize”, “powder coat RAL 9005 matte”, “passivated”. If cosmetic appearance matters, say which faces are cosmetic.

5. Give Realistic Quantities and Dates

Ask for prices at several quantities. Include the date you need parts in hand — not just “ASAP” — so the supplier can plan machining and finishing capacity.

6. Tell the Supplier What the Part Does

One sentence about function — “this plate mounts a motor and must stay flat” — helps engineers suggest cheaper materials or processes and spot drawing errors early.

7. Protect Your Intellectual Property

If the design is sensitive, request an NDA before sending files and share only the parts you need quoted. Read more in our guide on protecting designs when sourcing.

What Happens After You Submit

At Zhufeng Precision an engineer reviews every RFQ, asks questions if anything is unclear, and returns a quote with unit prices, lead time and DFM notes. You can upload your drawing here or read how we handle custom parts from drawings.

Get a Quote for Your Parts

FAQ

Can I get a quote with only a 3D model?

Yes, for a budget quote. For production, add a 2D drawing with tolerances, threads and finish.

How many quantity breaks should I ask for?

Two or three, for example prototype quantity, pilot run and expected batch size.

How fast should a supplier reply to an RFQ?

For standard parts, a reply with a quote or technical questions within 24 hours on working days is a good benchmark.
